24/03/2014 – Machinedrum-Back Seat Ho (2014)

Another slice of electronica perfection from North Carolina native

Travis Stewart could be one of the prolific producers working in music at the moment. Since 2000 he has released more than an album a year and just as many EPs. Today sees the release of Machinedrum’s latest EP on Ninja Tune. Stewart has branded his music drill ‘n bass. This is a very fitting description. For three minutes the song meanders through low tempo glitchy electronic hip-hop that we’ve come to expect.

One of the down points of Back Seat Ho is that it’s a tad repetitive. The vocal sample isn’t as dynamic as I was hoping. It’s a call and response line when the male lead says the title of the song, and a female says it back. It’s a bit derogatory but I’ve heard a lot worse in recent years.

This is another strong release from Ninja Tune, in recent months they have been a bit quiet, but this is the first in a run of strong releases. If this carries on then they should have a very successful year. I think the same will be true for Machinedrum. Whether Stewart will release another album we will have to see, but if this EP is anything to go by it should be as good as last year’s Vapor City.

I love the beat! It’s too bad that the lyrics are so repetitive.
