Cult singer songwriter Jeb Loy Nichols returns with new mini-album in January
January is starting to look pretty good. Along with a whole slew of DIY and indie releases Jeb Loy Nichols has announced we’ll be returning with a mini-album, Ya Smell Me, on January 15th. As expected it’s another slice of country that sounds like a newly unearthed collaboration between Townes Van Zandt and Ry Cooder. The song is about an unnamed man who is telling his story about being a very handsome man, but lonesome man.
What makes Pretty Lonesome a special song is how it immediately bores into your being, with its laidback guitar, but on repeat listens it’s not one single guitar, but many layered ones all pulling together to create a cohesive ‘guitar’. Once you get your head round this, the rest of the song opens itself up, and you realise this is a massive song masquerading as a simple piece of lazy hazy afternoon country.
Ya Smell Me isn’t just Nichols crooning his way through the mini-album, it also features Andrew Hale, Distance, Nostalgia 77 and Spooner Oldham. If this isn’t another reason to look forward to the new year, I don’t know what is!
