Electronic legend returns with flawless new EP
Another week of drudgery is over and only the respite of a weekend stands between us and the prospect of another week of toil. So why not put on the latest offering from the good people at Wot Not Music, and play Danny Clark’s track Bleeding Gums in celebration.
As the EP comes out on the 16th of this month, only one track has been made available to, whet out whistles. The title track Bleeding Gums has flourishes of early dubstep pioneer Burial, glitchy vinyl crackle and ethereal synths, but before it gets all 2-step, a 4/4 beat kicks in and ratchets it up a notch. The rest of the track plays a game of tag with itself, between the post-dubstep vibes and house sensibilities. This idiosyncratic vibe permeants the whole EP, keeping the listener on their preverbal toes.
Ultimately Bleeding Gums is a masterclass in production and composition. Rolling beats ground floating soundscapes, but in a way that neither take the upper hand, and it all synergises to help the tracks, rather than slot into what currently trending. Given Clark’s track record and time in the dance world, is to be expected, but at the same time he hasn’t phoned this in. It looks like there is plenty of life and tricks left in the old dog!
